The Tayside Woodland Partnerships was registered as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCO 51345) in October 2021. It was formed with the objective of establishing and maintaining woodlands in Tayside for habitat restoration and sequestering carbon as a contribution to the Scottish Government’s target to achieve zero net emissions, and to play a part in addressing the climate and nature emergency.
The charity aims to establish at least 10ha of community woodlands in partnership with landowners over the next decade; ie 2023-2033 and it is anticipated that it will eventually sequester around 3,000 tonnes CO2e / 1.6 Tonnes CO2e per member or around 20% of current per capita emissions in Scotland
The broad aims of the charity are:-
- The advancement of environmental protection and improvement
- Establishing and managing new woodlands
- Acquiring and, in partnerships, managing established woodlands in Tayside
- Connecting with other groups, communities and landowners across Tayside and beyond to form a network in which each can give and receive support, information, advice and collective strength from each other
- Raise members and the wider public’s awareness of environmental issues
- Enhance biodiversity
- Improve the landscape ecology
- Where relevant, create natural flood defences
- Provide opportunities for enjoyment of the countryside for communities
- Sequester carbon dioxide to offset emissions as a contribution to achieving the national target of zero net emissions by 2045
