Continuing the planting from last weekend, seven volunteers selected and protected more than 40 small oak trees that had grown from last years acorns (prospects). We chose the ones that had the best access to light beween the canopy of the mature oaks above.
We also planted 25 Scots pine, 20 goat willow, 20 gean, 20 downy birch, 20 holly, and 8 ash.
A productive session enjoyed by everyone. Thanks to everyone who helped out!
Looking to next year we will aim to continue the additions of young trees and selective protection. Before then perhaps we can initiate a slow survey of the compositon of the various compartments of the woodland? Do get in touch (Contact Us) if you are interested in participating in this. We would be collecting data on the locations of the oldest and most notable trees and discovering where the next areas for planting are. This data collection is essential for the development of a management plan for Black Spout Woods which considers its growth towards the next century.
